Senegalese-American rapper, Akon to be honoured as ‘Advocate of the Year’ at the African Diaspora Awards


Akon (real name Aliuane Damala Badara Thiam) has been selected to receive the Advocate of the Year award at the upcoming African Diaspora Awards 2015.


The 42-year old singer will be honoured for his solar power initiative, Akon Lighting Africa, which aims to bring electricity to millions of African households with solar energy.

Akon launched the project last year with partners Samba Bathily and  Thione Niang and so far, the initiative has operations in 11 nations, including Guinea Conakry, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Benin and Sierra Leone.‎ 

The African Diaspora Awards is aimed at celebrating exemplary individuals who have made a significant difference in the African community in the United States. The award ceremony will be holding on the 21st of November.
